The lack of awareness, in some parts of the world, of the international slave trade is “surprising”.

That’s the view of one professor, specializing in African anthropology and the history of the Atlantic slave trade.

The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is observed annually on 25 March.

The day also aims to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice today.

Professor Christopher DeCorse took part in a remembrance event at UN headquarters on Thursday.

Matthew Wells asked him if the day remains as important as ever.
