A leading human rights expert has added his voice to calls for the United Kingdom and Sweden to respect the findings of a UN committee on whistleblower Julian Assange.

Alfred de Zayas, an Independent Expert appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, said that the two countries should accept a recent majority vote by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which ruled that Mr Assange’s case contravened international covenants.

Failure to heed the UN ruling would be nothing short of an “à la carte approach to human rights”, Mr de Zayas explained to Daniel Johnson.
