A volcano that erupted on the Cape Verde island of Fogo almost three weeks ago is having a huge impact on the country’s economy and people’s lives.

Many lost their homes, 120 hectares of agricultural land was destroyed, and much of the cattle were killed.

An international appeal for assistance is being prepared by the government of Cape Verde to help provide food and shelter for the islanders.

Eleutério Guevane has been speaking with Teresa Encarnação, from the UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination office, about the effects of the volcano.
