The Japanese government continues to monitor radioactivity in seawater after a major earthquake damaged a nuclear power plant in March 2011.

The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant prompted the evacuation of more than 100,000 people for fear of exposure to radioactive elements released from the damaged reactors.

In order to verify the accuracy of the results from its monitoring of radioactivity, the Japanese authorities are working with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
