The people of Syria are tired and desperate after more than three years of civil war, according to the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on the situation in Syria.
Around 200,000 people have been killed in the conflict which has pitted government forces against rebel groups.
In recent months a new terrorist threat has emerged with the appearance of the group ISIL, also known as ISIS.
Staffan de Mistura has recently wrapped up a 40-day visit to the region, in his capacity as Special Envoy.
