The World Food Programme (WFP) has started its first operation to provide food for the most vulnerable people affected by the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The agency is distributing food boxes containing ready-to-eat canned goods such as meat, fish, vegetables as well as biscuits, jam and tea in transit centres and public shelters in Donetsk and Luhansk.

According to WFP, since the beginning of September 10,000 daily rations, enough to feed 2,000 people for five days, have been distributed so far.

The agency says it is planning to distribute a total of 90,000 daily rations which would feed more than 18,000 people for five days before the end of the month.

To find out more about this operation, Nikola Krastev spoke with Francesca Caponera, WFP Spokesperson in Ukraine.
