A convoy of 18 trucks carrying food to Gaza crossed the Rafah crossing from Egypt for the first time in seven years on Wednesday, says the World Food Programme (WFP).

The UN food agency says the food is enough to feed approximately 150,000 people for five days.

The trucks travelled for seven hours from Alexandria where the food was procured across the Sinai Peninsula to reach the Rafah crossing.

Gaza has been under an Israeli blockade since 2007 which has prevented food and other supplies from entering the territory through the crossing.

To find out more about the importance of the opening of the Rafah crossing, Reem Abaza spoke with Pablo Recalled, WFP’s Country Director in Palestine.
