The UN has launched a global call to action during a special event to mark the 500 days that remain before the deadline for meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The eight goals were set by world leaders in September 2000 to fight poverty, hunger and disease, protect the environment and expand education, basic health and women’s empowerment.
