The rights of indigenous peoples have yet to be realized, 20 years after the adoption of a UN declaration on the matter, according to an indigenous person from Canada.

Kenneth Deer, a Mohawk from Kahnawake in Canada, is a member of the Haudenosaunee also known as the Six Nations Confederacy.

He’s in New York to celebrate the International Day of Indigenous Peoples observed annually on 9 August.

There are an estimated 370 million indigenous peoples in some 90 countries around the world. They also constitute 15 per cent of the world’s poor.

A World Conference on Indigenous Peoples will be held in New York in September this year.

Mr Deer began by sharing with Jocelyne Sambira the advances made in promoting the rights of indigenous peoples.
