People should be careful about making correlations between being a woman and what you stand for.

That’s what the United States Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power told Paulina Kubiak for a series on the significance of women serving on the UN Security Council.

Women ambassadors in the Council do not vote in unison because they are there to represent their governments and national interests.

Ambassador Power said when she does push for a gender approach, like the inclusion of more women in peacekeeping, it’s because her country supports it.

She began by sharing what it felt like to make “history” because for the first time, a record number of women are participating in the Security Council.
