Around 1.3 billion people globally are dependent on forests for their livelihood according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The State of the World’s Forests report released by FAO on Monday argues that the role of forests in food security and development is often over looked.

It says the socio-economic benefits of forests are often not adequately addressed in forest and other relevant policies.

Sandra Ferrari asked Ewald Rametsteiner, a Senior Forestry Officer with FAO, how forests contribute to development.
