Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are adopting public policies to support family farming which is seen as “essential for food security and rural welfare in the region”, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Latin America and the Caribbean is the region which has made the greatest advances in the fight against hunger in the past two decades, the agency says.

Eight countries in the region have managed to eradicate hunger while fifteen countries have already achieved the first Millennium Development Goal of reducing by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger.

Alejandro Flores Navo, Fisheries and Aquaculture Officer at FAO explained to Sandra Ferrari that small scale farmers in the region need more access to resources which include land, water, capital and markets.
