Famine can be avoided if civilians in South Sudan can return to their land to plant crops, according to United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay.

The displacement of close to a million civilians due to ongoing conflict in the country is threatening to disrupt the planting season which will lead to a shortage of food.

The UN human rights chief, who is in South Sudan, met both the President and the leader of the rebels in the last two days.

She said they are keen to find a political solution to stop the fighting.
