At least 22 million unsafe abortions take place worldwide every year, according to the Wold Health Organization (WHO).

Unsafe abortions occur when a pregnancy is terminated either by persons lacking the necessary skills or in an environment that does not conform to minimal medical standards.

Globally, unsafe abortions account for 13 per cent of all pregnancy-related deaths, and around 5 million women are admitted to hospital as a result of unsafe abortions.

Doctor Bela Ganatra from WHO told UN Radio’s Stephanie Coutrix that she wants women to know there is no country in the world where it is illegal for a woman to get care for complications due to abortion.
