Europe TB cases down, but fails to cure multidrug-resistant patients

Europe has seen the fastest decline of rates of tuberculosis in the world, according to a new report by the World Health Organization or WHO.

The report published ahead of World Tuberculosis Day on 24 March, shows that tuberculosis (TB) cases are down 5 per cent each year in the countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area.

However, challenges persist. Only 50 per cent of patients with multi-drug and extensively drug-resistant TB (M/XDR-TB) are being cured.

Speaking to Jocelyne Sambira, Dr. Masoud Dara, Programme Manager for the TB and M/XDR-TB control programme explains how and why.
