An appeal for $2 billion is being made by the UN to tackle what’s been described as a deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Sahel region of Africa.

More than 20 million people across eight countries are struggling to feed themselves and over two and a half million require urgent lifesaving food assistance.

It’s hoped the money, which is part of a three-year response plan, will help to break what the UN is calling a “crisis cycle” in the region.

Daniel Dickinson spoke to Senegal-based Robert Piper, the UN’s Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sahel and asked him about the current situation there.
