UN agencies are concerned that thousands of people, mainly Haitians in the Dominican Republic may be stripped of citizenship.

This follows a ruling by the country’s constitutional court last week on the children of undocumented migrants who have been in the Dominican Republic and registered as Dominicans as far back as 1929.

The Court says these people cannot have Dominican nationality because their parents were considered to be “in transit.”

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Refugee agency (UNHCR) are concerned that this ruling can make thousands of people stateless in the Dominican Republic.
