The United Nations on Thursday recognized the contributions of charity organizations in alleviating poverty by celebrating the first International Day of Charity.

In a message marking the day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that the role of charity can and should grow as efforts increase to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

Dianne Penn caught up with Hugh Evans, Chief Executive Officer at The Global Poverty Project, who believes the world possesses the means to end extreme poverty in a generation.

He also previews the Global Citizen Festival, a concert that will be held later this month featuring superstar acts such as Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys and Kings of Leon, which aims to accelerate action to achieve this goal.
