The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warns that a proposed law on civil society groups in Egypt could constitute a blow to the hopes and ideals of the 2011 revolution.

Navi Pillay is calling for the draft legislation to be carefully examined by human rights experts and brought into line with international standards.

She says the law comes at a time of “mounting concerns” in Egypt, including in relation to the new Constitution and the manner in which it was adopted.

The Human Rights chief reports that she has met with the country’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva, where her office is based, and also with the chief justice of the Supreme Court.

Ms. Pillay was in New York this week and Donn Bobb asked her about her concerns for Egypt and for human rights worldwide in light of the ongoing global financial crisis.
