The United Nations this week commemorated the anniversary of the 1994 Rwandan genocide when Hutu extremists murdered approximately 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

The genocide, which started on 7 April and went on for about 100 days, is commemorated each year to remind the world about the terrible and irreversible loss suffered by humanity as a result of this tragedy.

UN Radio’s Beng Poblete-Enriquez prepared this piece, with excerpts of the Rwandan commemoration.

The music in the background is by Sabrina Iyadede who left Rwanda in 1994 when she was a young girl.
