In many countries, governments often subsidize the energy sector, keeping the price of power lower than it might otherwise be. The aim is to ease the burden on the poor by helping them access energy more cheaply.

But, a new study by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) suggests that these subsidies don't always have the desired effect.

In this interview with IMF’s Lika Gueye, Trevor Alleyne with the fund’s African Department explains that energy subsidies can end up disproportionately helping the well-off.
