Forever Free: Celebrating Emancipation is the theme of this year’s Commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade at the United Nations.

France was one of the countries actively involved in the trade.

And on May 10th, France celebrated the national day of remembrance of the slave trade, slavery and its abolition.

The Committee for the Remembrance of Slavery has contributed to the updating of educational programmes, the encouragement of further research, the promotion of the heritage of the slave trade, slavery and abolition and the bringing together of citizens in order to understand the past and the memory of slavery.

In this interview with Donn Bobb, the President of the French National Committee for the Memory of the Slave Trade Dr. Françoise Vergès talks about the early role of France.
