Education is key to improving the lives of children.  But in one area of the northeast region of India, education is suffering considerably due to poverty and conflict.

Shimreichon Luithui-Erni is a member of the Naga ethnic group from the northeast region of India where she says violations of human rights take place.  According to Shimreichon, the promise of education for the children comes with a prize where they end up being locked up or have to work as labourers.

With some funding from the UN Voluntary Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery, in collaboration with the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) and India’s Social Welfare Ministry, Shimreichon tells Beng Poblete-Enriquez that they managed to rescue and rehabilitate over 200 children in one district in India.
