The number of deaths in detention centres in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) almost doubled from 56 in 2011 compared to 101 deaths recorded in 2012, according to a UN report. Poor conditions, malnutrition, limited access to health care, among other things were the main causes of these deaths.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights says “It is the responsibility of the State to keep prisoners alive and in good health, in accordance with international standards”.

In this interview with Beng Poblete-Enriquez, Mr. Scott Campbell, the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the DRC says “it’s important to draw attention to what is a long-standing and a very grave problem today”, as he thinks “there’s political will and good opportunities for change to happen”.
