South Sudan became the world’s newest nation when it gained independence in July 2011.

But nearly two years since that landmark, the country faces overwhelming challenges in areas such as food security, education and health.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is seeking $1.16 billion to finance operations in South Sudan during 2013.

To get an overview of the situation and what the appeal covers, Patrick Maigua in Geneva sat down with OCHA spokesperson Jens Laerke.
