A $1.6 billion humanitarian appeal to assist millions of hungry people in Africa’s Sahel region is nearly 60 per cent funded, according to UN humanitarian agencies and their partners.

They also expect that malnutrition levels and food insecurity will ease because good rains will increase cereal production and there is a likely drop in food prices following the first harvests in October.

This is welcome news in West Africa where food insecurity is just one of multiple crises including flooding, cholera, locust infestations and displacement due to conflict.

For an update on what is happening in the Sahel, Patrick Maigua in Geneva spoke to David Greesly, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the region.
