Making the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities count for Women and Children is the theme of the current session of the Conference on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

It was adopted by the General Assembly in December of 2006 and came into force on 3 May 2008 when it received its 20th ratification.

Article 40 of the Convention says “The States Parties shall meet regularly in a Conference of States Parties in order to consider any matter with regard to the implementation of the present Convention.”

The Conference on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which began on Wednesday, was preceded on Tuesday by a civil society forum that focused on some of the problems faced by women and children with disabilities.
