Townships in Beira city in the eastern part of Mozambique are vulnerable to floods because they are up to 10 metres below sea level.

To prevent the devastation caused by floods, local authorities have put in place a warning system for the approximately 450,000 inhabitants of the city and its surroundings.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk (UNISDR) says the system is efficient and effective.

In fact, UNISDR, together with the Munich Re-Foundation and the Global Risk Forum based in Davos, Switzerland, has given Beira the first RISK award for its risk preparedness.

The head of UNISDR Margareta Wahlström discussed the award with Patrick Maigua in Geneva.
