The trial of former Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic gets underway at The Hague with a stern warning by the judge following gestures made in court.

Mr. Mladic reportedly made a throat-slitting gesture to a victim. The judge told all sides that inappropriate interactions were unacceptable.

Mladic is facing charges on war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide for the massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys during the capture of the Bosnian town of Srebrenica in 2005.

The former army commander was arrested a year ago in Serbia after spending 16 years on the run.

Julie Walker spoke with Nerma Jelačić the spokesperson for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague about the trial.
