In a historic verdict, a United Nations-backed court has found former Liberian leader Charles Taylor guilty for his role in supporting rebels who committed atrocities during the civil war in Sierra Leone.

His conviction marks the first time in modern history that a former head of state has been found guilty of planning, aiding and abetting war war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the verdict “a historic and momentous day for the people of Sierra Leone, for the region and beyond”.

He says it sends a strong signal to all leaders that they are and will be held accountable for their actions.
