Forests cover one-quarter of the Earth’s land surface. They help preserve agricultural land, protect water resources and even stave off natural disasters.

And more than a billion people worldwide depend on forests for their livelihoods. The vital role of forests was celebrated during the International Year of Forests, which concludes this month.

Dianne Penn spoke with Dr. Mary Menton, a Research Fellow at the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) in Lima, Peru, who focuses on the Amazon.

She talks about its importance to numerous groups—from loggers, to farmers, to the people who live there.
