Senior UN refugee official visiting the southern Caucasus

A senior United Nations official is visiting the southern Caucasus where he is meeting with senior leaders and making extensive field visits to assess the plight of refugees and those displaced in Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

The Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees, Kamel Morjane, arrived in Armenia early yesterday. He met with the country’s Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan later in the day.

Mr. Morjane is expected to proceed by road to Georgia, visiting a number of refugee sites on the way. He is scheduled to meet Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze at the end of the afternoon.

On Saturday, he will leave for Azerbaijan, where he is scheduled to meet with the Prime Minister Artutr Razi-zadeh next Monday. He will stay in Azerbaijan until 9 July.
