Security Council welcomes responsibility shown by Central Africans at polls

Council President Amb. Wang
The United Nations Security Council today commended the people of the Central African Republic on the responsibility they showed during their first round of presidential and legislative elections last month and noted that the second round in May would mark the end of the country's political transition.

The Council issued a press statement after a closed briefing by Gen. Lamine Cissé, the Representative of Secretary-General Kofi Annan for the landlocked country and head of the UN Peacebuilding Office in the Central African Republic (BONUCA).

"Members of the Security Council unanimously welcomed the fact that the first round of presidential and legislative elections in the Central African Republic were held with respect for democratic values," the President of the 15-member body for April, Chinese Ambassador Wang Guangya, told journalists after the briefing.

Council members keenly encouraged all political and social parties in the country to pursue their efforts and welcomed continued assistance from international partners, especially for the electoral process, he said.
