Secretary-General appoints new representative in Central African Republic

Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed General Lamine Cissé, former Interior Minister of Senegal, as his Representative in the Central African Republic and Head of the United Nations Peace-building Support Office (BONUCA) in that country, a UN spokesman announced today at Headquarters.

General Cissé, who was expected to take office in Bangui at the end of the month, is in New York this week for briefings with senior UN officials, the spokesman said.

Mr. Cissé succeeds Cheikh Tidiane Sy, who resigned last May.
