A photo exhibition from the International Criminal Court explores what is lost when one is displaced by conflict, what it means to lose a home, an identity, and one's roots, and to build a new home and new life for generations to come.

Thousands of people were displaced or affected by the 2008 conflict in the Republic of Georgia.

Elene, 77, looks at a photograph of her former home in South Ossetia.

She has been living in the IDP settlement of Karaleti, in the Republic of Georgia, since she was displaced by fighting in 2008. 
 

Nanuli, from Tskhinvali, Georgia, was a teacher by profession but spent the rest of her time cultivating the land and tending to the family animals with her husband Elguja. 

"My father could not have withstood the incredible change that we've endured”, says Elguja, referring to his experience of being displaced from the family home in Tskhinvali.

“Once we are gone, there won't be anyone to struggle for our return,” says Abel, as he watches his granddaughter, Barbara, inside their home in the Tserovani displacement settlement in the Republic of Georgia.

Barbara was born in displacement.

The centre provides an array of support services and activities for children in the settlement; most of the residents were displaced by the 2008 conflict.

“Life after Conflict: Stories as told to ICC Outreach by survivors of the world's worst crimes” marks the 20th anniversary of the International Criminal Court on 1 July 2022.

The exhibition was mounted at UN Headquarters during the month of July, and will travel next to Europe. Find out more here.
