UN envoy discusses Iraq with top official from the United States

The senior United Nations envoy to Iraq met today in Washington, D.C. with United States Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage to examine the world body's role in the country.

Ashraf Qazi, Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative for Iraq, was expected to discuss the UN's support for the elections and the political process, a UN spokesman reported.

Mr. Qazi is scheduled to be in New York on Monday, when he will present the Secretary-General's latest report on Iraq to the Security Council.
