UN refugee agency concerned at disappearance in Kazakhstan, deportations in Thailand

The United Nations refugee agency today expressed deep concern over the fate of a Chinese Uighur asylum seeker in Kazakhstan who it fears might have been deported, as well as Thailand’s deportation to Laos of 53 ethnic Hmong, including a newborn baby.

UN agency praises Kazakh decision not to extradite refugee to Uzbekistan

The United Nations refugee agency today warmly welcomed a decision by Kazakhstan’s authorities not to extradite an Uzbek refugee, despite a request from Uzbekistan, but instead to hand him over to the UN for immediate permanent resettlement with his family.

With 1.3 million people in the Semipalatinsk region of Kazakhstan still suffering from the effects of almost 40 years of nuclear tests and the local economy still reeling from the collapse of the Soviet Union, an exhibition has opened at United Nations headquarters to highlight the area’s plight.
