The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and Kyrgyz authorities have launched an initiative to ensure safe access to education at the start of the new school year in September for thousands of youngsters affected by the recent violence in the southern city of Osh.

The United Nations and its aid partners today voiced concern that immediate humanitarian needs in Kyrgyzstan will go unmet since they have only received 30 per cent of the $96 million requested to provide life-saving assistance to civilians affected by recent violence.
