UN offers Kyrgyzstan support to protect Uzbek asylum-seekers

Amid mounting international concern over the forced deportation of Uzbek asylum-seekers who fled the recent military crackdown in their country to find safety in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan, the assistant United Nations refugee chief today pledged to help the Kyrgyz Government protect the displaced during the search for durable solutions.

Reacting to reports about the possible forced repatriation of Uzbek asylum seekers who fled the recent military crackdown in their country to take shelter in a rough camp in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today appealed to the Kyrgyz Government to abide by its international obligations in the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees.

A United Nations human rights team sent to investigate last month's violence in Uzbekistan reported that the security situation of over 400 refugees sheltered in a camp near the Kyrgyz city of Jalal Abad had greatly deteriorated following raids by a group of unidentified men.

Following the forced return of four Uzbek men who fled to Kyrgyzstan after last month's deadly crackdown in the town of Andijan, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today urged the Kyrgyz Government to cease all further deportations of Uzbek asylum-seekers.
