UN experts, partners draw up $100-million plan to avert human bird flu pandemic

United Nations experts and their partners today unveiled a $100 million programme to reduce the risk of bird flu spreading to humans and called on the global community to come forward with funds to help stave off the potential for a pandemic, which in a worst-case scenario could kill tens of millions of people around the world.

Bird flu, which health officials fear could mutate into a deadly human pandemic, in a worst-case scenario, remains a critical concern in many Asian countries and requires more attention by both affected states and the international community, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
