The United Nations today appealed for $1 million for emergency aid over the next six months to help victims of the July earthquakes in Tajikistan, which destroyed or damaged nearly 2,600 houses and affected some 21,000 people, as winter approaches.
The United Nations is providing $20,000 in emergency assistance to Tajikistan after earthquakes hit two southern districts of the Central Asian country at the weekend, affecting around 9,000 people and damaging infrastructure in a region close to the border with Afghanistan.
The top United Nations political officer arrived in Tajikistan today at the start of a visit to review support for Central Asian countries in promoting regional cooperation in the battle against religious extremism, organized crime, terrorism and drug trafficking.
