United Nations police today in Timor-Leste are investigating deadly violence that erupted at a camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) near the capital’s airport, in which one Timorese was killed and two injured.

UN envoy optimistic on Timor-Leste while warning against early UN withdrawal

A day after briefing the Security Council on the need for continued international support for Timor-Leste, the United Nations envoy to the country today said he was cautiously optimistic about its future ahead of this year’s landmark elections, but he also highlighted the deadly violence in 2006 as a warning against any early withdrawal of UN assistance.

Highlighting the “fragile” security situation in Timor-Leste, the top United Nations envoy to the impoverished nation today reiterated Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s call for more international police during this year’s elections, the first to be held there since it gained independence from Indonesia in 2002.
