UN calls for better civilian protection as DR Congo violence uproots tens of thousands

With close to 100,000 people uprooted from their homes by the recent wave of violence in the province of North Kivu, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the UN humanitarian agency today renewed its call for better measures to protect civilians and more aid for distressed families.

DR Congo: Tens of thousands displaced by the latest violence in North Kivu – UN

The latest outbreak of violence in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has displaced more than 40,000 people, the United Nations refugee agency said today, adding that the distribution of relief items will soon commence among those uprooted, with most of them having sought shelter in schools and churches.

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has stepped up civilian protection measures following the latest outbreak of violence in the volatile North Kivu province, in the country’s east, where a former rebel leader indicted for war crimes instigated a mutiny last month, a UN official said today.

UN refugee agency providing aid to people fleeing fighting in eastern DR Congo
