UN mission continues to press for return home of Hutu rebels from DR of Congo

Noting that more than 12,000 foreign militia members have been repatriated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and about the same number remain, the head of the United Nations mission said the programme has reached its limits and the mission is increasingly joining with the DRC army to put pressure on those staying behind.

UN agency transfers new DR of Congo refugees to northern Burundi

The UN refugee agency is transferring more than 400 recently arrived refugees from the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), who say they are fleeing fighting between the DRC army and the Mayi-Mayi militia, to a camp in northern Burundi.

New UN repatriation route opens for 155,000 Congolese refugees in Tanzania

Some 155,000 Congolese who fled fighting over the past decade to camps in Tanzania will now have the opportunity to go home after the United Nations refugee agency officially launched a new repatriation operation by boat this week across Lake Tanganyika.

MONUC deploys into east DR of Congo where Ugandan-based soldiers briefly seen

The United Nations peacekeeping operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) is assisting the country's troops in cordon and search missions in the troubled east, where Ugandan rebels have been sighted and into which Ugandan-based soldiers were reported to have crossed briefly last month.

United Nations peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have helped free four election officials who were abducted in the eastern North Kivu province almost two weeks ago, a spokesman for the world body said today.
