UN tribunal seeks arrest of Bosnian Serb leader wanted for contempt of court

The United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) today issued an arrest warrant against Branko Djeric, a former Prime Minister of Republika Srpska, the Bosnian Serb-dominated entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, to face charges of contempt of court.

A Bosnian Serb military police sub-commander accused of a range of war crimes, including gang rape and torture of women, has been brought before the United Nations criminal tribunal on the Balkan violence of the early 1990’s after ten years on the run.

UN war crimes tribunals call for more help from Member States in arresting fugitives

Member States must do more to assist the United Nations war crimes tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia in bringing perpetrators to justice, the top legal officials from those bodies told the Security Council today, as they highlighted the progress made and challenges remaining to completing their work.
