Setbacks seen in Bougainville peace process, Security Council told

Progress in the Bougainville peace process had seen some recent setbacks and Secretary-General Kofi Annan was intending to extend the mandate of the United Nations Political Office there by another year to allow it to complete its tasks, a senior UN official told the Security Council today.

The United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, today warmly congratulated the Government of Papua New Guinea and the Bougainville parties on the successful outcome of an historic vote in the Parliament that had given legal effect to the Bills implementing the Bougainville Peace Agreement of 30 August 2001.
