UN agency launches plan to protect girls, women in Philippines typhoon aftermath

Two weeks after Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines, more than 3.2 million women and girls of reproductive age are still in need of urgent care and protection, the United Nations population agency today said, launching an appeal for $30 million to provide services and aid during the next six months.

UN-backed global health conference seeks to save millions of newborns each year

Scaling up existing interventions, such as using low cost medicines and exclusively breastfeeding after birth, could help save the lives of millions of babies each year, the United Nations said today as hundreds of health officials and government representatives gathered for the opening session of the first-ever Global Newborn Health Conference.

Iraq making progress on maternal health but still short of development goals, says UN
