Lack of infrastructure investment holding back Asia-Pacific region – UN meeting

The long-term development of the Asia-Pacific region is being threatened by a lack of investment in infrastructure, according to a United Nations-sponsored meeting which ended today with a call to back a proposal to set up a new regional body to raise funds.

While developing economies in Asia and the Pacific are projected to grow by an impressive 7.3 per cent this year, such growth is driven by high consumption of resources and cannot be sustained long-term, the head of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) warned today, as he called on all countries to adopt sustainable development strategies.

East and South-East Asian governments must do more to “reach the unreached” by providing improved schools and hospitals, as well as protecting the environment, participants at a United Nations regional forum said today at the close of a two-day meeting in Hanoi, Viet Nam.
