UN agency against HIV voices concern over conviction of Malawian gay couple

The head of the United Nations agency fighting HIV/AIDS has expressed concern over the recent conviction in Malawi of a gay couple and their sentencing to 14 years in jail, warning that it could undermine health-care efforts aimed at helping people living with the disease.

More than 90 per cent of men having sex with men in the Asia-Pacific region, a group in which HIV prevalence has reached alarming levels, do not have access to prevention and care services due to an adverse legal and social environment, a United Nations-backed forum was told today.
