Urgent scale-up of action necessary to achieve universal access – UNAIDS

Achieving the goal of providing universal access to comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support by 2010 will require a dramatic and urgent scale-up of efforts, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) said in a new report released today.

Rupert Everett, the actor who is a Special Representative of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), is on a four-day visit to Russia to learn what is being done to reverse the spread of the epidemic in a country where the number of those living with HIV is officially put at 386,000, but is widely believed to be up to 1.1 million.

First-year success reported for UN-backed HIV and TB drug facility for poor

In the year since it was established to provide medicines for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis to the poorest people of developing countries, the United Nations-backed international drug purchase facility UNITAID has managed to reduce the price of HIV treatments for children by almost 40 per cent.
